B&O / Garrett Room
Discover the profound impact of America's first railroad and the man for whom Garrett County was named. This exhibit explores the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, founded in 1827 by Baltimore merchants and bankers who dreamed of connecting their city to the Ohio River over 300 miles away. When this region separated from Allegany County in 1872, the new county was named in his honor, recognizing his contributions to the area's development. Through artifacts, photographs, and railroad memorabilia, experience how the B&O transformed this remote mountain region into a thriving hub of commerce and tourism, with Oakland serving as the county seat.

The Hotels Room
Step into the golden age of luxury tourism when Garrett County's grand resort hotels attracted the nation's elite. This exhibit showcases the glamorous Deer Park and Oakland Hotels, along with smaller establishments that transformed the county into a premier vacation destination in the late 1800s. The Deer Park Hotel, built in 1873 became one of America's most famous resorts at the time. The Oakland Hotel, built closer to the railroad station to serve the twelve daily trains, hosted notable guests including Alexander Graham Bell, who stayed for several weeks while installing Garrett County's first functional phone line between the two hotels.
Through vintage photographs, hotel memorabilia, and artifacts, relive an era when Garrett County rivaled the finest resort destinations in the nation.
